Get Glowing this Fishing Season
Using glow
sticks to enhance baits and increase overall catch is not a new idea for
anglers. According to Noel Vick in his article They're Creepy and They're Kooky,
"Glow makes them [fish] go. We can't stress that enough. Fish see these baits
easier and I'm convinced the glow features have helped me coax negative or neutral
mood fish to bite." If you have not yet stocked your night fishing tackle box
with glow sticks, you're limiting your night fishing catches.
Attaching a glow stick to your line while fishing acts as a virtual magnifier making your bait seem larger than it is, and the light attracts fish as well as other schools of bait in the area.
Each glow stick color has different qualities. For example, each color of glow stick has a different quality of brightness and water penetration. Water penetration means how far of a distance the color of light can permeate through the water before it disappears. The colors in the spectrum which disappear are, from first to last, red, green, blue, and purple. It is important to remember that when the moon is full and there is a lot of light penetrating the water, the light on your shallow baits will be diminished.
Described below are some specific ways to effectively use glow sticks for night fishing:
Attach glow sticks to your long lines-this is a great way to attract fish to your baited hooks.
For
deep sea fishing, 6
inch glow sticks can be used for catching large game fish. And when it comes
to what colors of glow sticks to use, please note: saltwater fish, such as swordfish,
are more apt to bite on the colors blue and green.
For freshwater fishing, we recommend using 1.5 inch glow sticks. Green and pink are the colors most often used.
For personal safety, and to quickly spot your fishing companions, hang a 6 inch glow stick around your neck. Glow sticks are also a great way to light up the inside of a boat, or consider using glow necklaces to outline areas of the boat that may pose a risk in the dark.
Marking
a prime fishing location for night fishing is easy when you have glow
sticks. Place a 6 inch glow stick in a milk jug and fasten a weighted line
to it. The glow sticks will burn for over 12 hours, so you can mark your spot
by day, and revisit the location at night. Lobstermen will often mark their
traps with a milk jug and a 6 inch glow stick the same way.
6 inch glow sticks can also be used to mark any equipment you leave on shore-as well as the boat dock.
